About the Firm

Nelson / Boivin, Architecture & Planning is a full service professional firm specializing in multi-family and single family residential as well as commercial design services.

Alan Boivin has endeavored to provide the highest quality services from design through construction documents, from inception to the end of construction. Growing up with a love of building and construction, Alan has the practical knowledge of the details that make up a well designed project.

After graduating with honors from Arizona State University at Tempe, Arizona in 1973 with a Bachelor of Architecture Degree, Alan Boivin was first licensed in the State of Arizona in 1976 and soon afterward in California.

Alan was a partner in the Santa Monica firm of Johannes Van Tilburg & Partners in charge of a wide range of award winning projects. He started his own practice in 1990 after being with JVT & Partners for nearly 11 years.

Alan has a wealth of experience in residential architecture from single family custom homes, tract homes, and townhomes to large attached projects with higher densities. His work included:

The West Palm Apartments project (582 units in Westchester) that won a Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce Beautification Award.

McClellan/Centinela Apartments (63 units in West Los Angeles) for Homestead Development, winner of a Better Homes and Gardens Award.

Other projects to his credit include the Toluca Gardens Apartments for Chandler Partners (a 49 unit apartment project), Santa Fe & Sienna Condominiums for the Valencia Co. (which has won numerous marketing awards). He was also involved in the design of both locations of the Citrus Suites apartments, located at Ocean Front Walk in Santa Monica and at 4th & Broadway, for Calstar Development.

After the Northridge earthquake, he worked with the City of Los Angeles Housing Department and private developers in the replacement of housing that was destroyed. Projects included both the Ventura Canyon Apartments and Valleyheart Apartments located in the L.A. river basin that were completely rebuilt after the quake.

As architect for several restaurants including L’Express restaurant in Studio City, and King George Fish & Chips on the Santa Monica Promenade, he has demonstrated experience and his ability to work within multiple disciplines. His commercial experience includes numerous office buildings and specialty projects such as Johnson Motors Mercedes Benz in West Covina, and the facilities for Sebastian Hair Products on De Soto in Warner Center.

In the mid-1990s, Alan worked with Beptal, Inc. in remodeling and revitalizing an existing shopping center in north Long Beach called Parkview Village.

More recently Alan and his partner Greg Nelson have helped in revitalizing downtown Los Angeles that began with the 635 unit Medici Apartment project and then followed by the award winning 300-unit Orsini Apartments. Both projects were for G.H. Palmer Associates.

Alan has a contextual approach to design and is comfortable working in a variety of styles. He uses a proven people oriented and service minded approach to his architectural practice.
